John Thomson was born in 1947 and grew up in the Royston Mains area of Edinburgh He says his childhood was like many others but he had an illegal Bookie for a Grandfather ,a Granny who took him cinder collecting on the railway tracks and Uncles who took him on deliveries on their horse and carts .Once he left Ainslie Park School at the age of 15 his varied working life began. It was a time when jobs were plentiful If you didn't like a job you could leave and get another job on the same day. We hear about working in Mitchells Saw Mill ,The Co-op ,FAG Barings, Bond 9 to name but a few John had 10 jobs before starting work at the Brewery. We hear of the long hours worked but also of the fun and tricks he and his work mates played on each other
